Restored brick work and stone should match existing masonry mortar color as closely as possible, almost impossible to tell from the original mortar removed from all brick and stone. When we're finished with the job it will be virtually impossible to identify the areas of masonry brick repair.
Brick in need
of tuckpointing.
What tuckpointing should look like when finished.
Tuckpointing to the entire building may not be necessary.
Tuckpointing to the entire building may not be necessary, bricks often develop what are called settlement cracks, these cracks are what needs to be repaired. If the cracks are not repaired water will infiltrate and freeze then move the brick or stone out of place resulting in unsightly fissures causing a cleft. Or the masonry's mortar may decay at a different rate, resulting in areas that have good mortar and areas that need to be tuckpointed.
The problem is, when doing what is known in the trade as "spot pointing," the repointed area sticks out like a sore thumb, because the mortar color doesn’t match. JND Enterprises are expert at matching mortar color.
When we spot point masonry, after finishing, the only way you can tell, is that you knew where the tuck pointing was performed.

Mortar repair and maintenance is essential to keep your brick and stone protected from the weather.
When the cement between brick starts to fall out or disintegrate, just know that it can be repaired and made to look and be firm, at a reasonable cost. Also remember brick repair is different from tuckpointing.
Part of the tuckpointing process consists of grinding and cleaning the mortar from around the bricks, this process can create a considerable amount of dust.
Water intrusion can cause mortar to weaken and deteriorate, exposing the brick or stone to the elements.
When the mortar begins to weaken and starts to crumble and fall out, the masonry may become loose. When this happens, tuckpointing is required to ensure structural integrity and the new application of mortar provides water resistance, (which is key) and gives the bricks of the home or property a fresh new look.
Mortar is essential to protecting the masonry from the elements. Brick and stone are among the most durable building materials but if not protected by the mortar they will become exposed and deteriorate, resulting in far more costly repairs.
Brick Crumbling?
Then the cement mortar is falling out from your brick, thus allowing the brick to be exposed to the elements and that's the start of the decaying process.
To solve or mitigate this problem, you need tuckpointing.
The mortar between brick and stone is the first line defense that protects masonry from the weather. Tuckpointing, or repointing brick and stone with new mortar that maintains the features, jointing style and color of the original mortar while enhancing its resistance to weather.
Brick and stone are very durable materials, that will last hundreds of years, as long as the mortar is looked after and maintained.
