Cheek Wall RestoredOften when you observe masonry you will notice that the mortar in between the bricks or stone has started to fall away from the joints, this can happen to new brickwork but mostly happens to old brick or stone work. Repairing the mortar in masonry is often called “tuckpointing,” it's also known as repointing. | Open Coping Stone JointsThis coping stone or, (cap stone), joint is missing mortar, note how the crack is open and exposing the masonry to water infiltration, suggesting that cracking may have been exacerbated by freeze thaw cycles. | Repaired Coping StoneMasonry has been restoration cleaned and tuckpointed. Coping stone has been repaired by caulking the joints with GE Silpruf silicone caulk. |
Brick Work Being PreppedRestoration cleaning will help in dust control when cutting back mortar joints by blowing away any loose mortar, thus reducing the amount mortar needing to be cut out. | Brick in Need of TuckpointingTuckpointing to Masonry is as paint to wood. Mortar is the glue that binds brick together and the protectant, shielding masonry from the damage caused by weather. | Red Brick RestorationThis building had an old sign over this portion of the wall, the sign being in disrepair was torn off the wall. After removing the sign the brick work was a wreck, most likely reason for the sloppy brick work, was that the mason thought the brick would never be seen as the sign would cover that portion of the wall. The mortar was not struck when laid and most of the mortar had weathered away. |
Red Brick RestorationIn this photo the mortar was cut back to about an inch. The brick was filthy from the laying process, mortar was smeared all over the brick. | Red Brick RestorationThis photo shows the results of removing the smeared mortar from the brick, we have cleaned the brick using EaCoChem's One Restore restoration detergent. Removing most of the smeared mortar from the masonry greatly improved the appearance. | Red Brick RestorationNow tuckpointed the brick work looks like the original. JND Enterprises are expert in all aspects of masonry restoration and masonry services. |
Rocky Face Stone w/ Concave JointingWithout the convex jointing style, the rocky face limestone doesn't seem as prominent as it could be, and to my eye looks very unattractive. | Convex or Beaded JointThe Beaded joint enhances rocky face or uneven rough masonry surfaces. | European Style Mortar JointingThe convex mortar joint is usually used for decretive jointing on masonry. Typically one would find the convex mortar joint on the rocky face masonry, such as Lannon stone, (as shown in this picture), or limestone. In the Chicago area it is also used for enhancing old common brick, this type of brick is generally found at the rear and sides of older masonry structures. |
