Water is Concrete & Stone
Masonry's Enemy

Stone decay can occur through erosion, freeze thaw, chemical attack, structural movement and physical damage.

A particular problem can develop where ferrous metals in the form of ties and clamps that were used to hold stonework together and in place during construction. These will often rust, and the rusty metal can expand, up to as much as 10 times its original size thus causing movement and shattering or spalling stonework.

Where such problems are occurring, (in most cases) it will be necessary to cut back the tie in question, and repair with a compatible repair mortar. While in extreme cases, complete or partial dismantling of each individual piece of stone may be necessary, and repairing with a Dutchman or replacement. Spalls are repaired with a lime based mortar repair or a modified polymer repair mortar.

Continuous exposure to moisture can be detrimental to the integrity of the stone. Applying a water repellant will greatly improve the stone's resistance to water intrusion that can cause a unsightly staining or cause the stone to spall.

Often times using a vapor permeable

surface protectant will reduce the need for cleaning or maintenance.

Typical spall caused by a rusting clip.

A properly performed repair by an experienced tuckpointer is almost indistinguishable from the original and last for years.

A spall of this size would need a Dutchman or cut-out and replaced.
